This is Cicero's story that the film didn't show. It explores a segment of his life from the terrible trauma that left him physically and emotionally fragile through his struggle to regain his health and life. It describes the development of his relationship with Maximus, and why his respect grew into undying and unquestioning loyalty for his general.
Julia's Journal Parts 1 and 2, by Hebe Blanco
While on a mission to save the empire from General Cassius, who has declared Marcus Aurelius dead and himself emperor, Maximus meets Julia, one of Cassius' slaves. She helps Maximus in his mission and also falls in love with him. Sent to Rome to start a new life, she never forgets him... and their paths unexpectedly cross again many yeras later.
